**Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing
About the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing
The course of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing was included among the applied professional courses in the Associate Degree Nursing Program of the Vocational School of Health Services between 1990–1997, and in the Undergraduate Nursing Program of Samsun School of Health between 1997–2016. On 14.02.2014, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing was established as one of the eight departments within the Nursing Department of our faculty (then Samsun School of Health). Our department consists of seven academic staff members: one professor, one associate professor, two assistant professors, one lecturer with an MSc degree, and two research assistants. Since the establishment of the department, our faculty members have taught the undergraduate course of the same name in the 5th semester of the 3rd year, and since 2017, they have also conducted the courses Gender and Health and Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing Internship Practice.
In addition to undergraduate education, since 2015, our Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing has offered courses within the Graduate School of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, and since 2016, it has been conducting the Thesis and Non-Thesis Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing under the Department of Nursing.
Educational Philosophy and Infrastructure of the Department
Education in our department is organized in a student-centered manner with the aim of “teaching how to think and act like a nurse.” The courses are enriched through the use of educational tools that support learning (birth models, automated birth simulators with software, videos, and films) and the participation of specialist nurse professionals (such as lactation nursing and IVF nursing). Our undergraduate students are offered the opportunity to perform laboratory practice in selected skills as preparation for clinical training. The practical components of undergraduate and graduate courses related to Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing are carried out in the clinics and outpatient units affiliated with the Ondokuz Mayıs University Health Practice and Research Center and the Samsun Maternity and Children’s Hospital under the Ministry of Health, under the supervision of responsible faculty members and clinical mentors.
